Being a modern couple (or a modern couple who also parents’) is A LOT! You’re managing careers, mental health, the ghosts of relationships past and constant pressure to “communicate better.” It’s easy to end up feeling like roommates or co-managers instead of partners.
Common issues I support with my couples are:
-
Adjusting to major life changes
-
Grief and loss
-
Communication Malfunction
-
Navigating divorce or parental separation
-
Blending Families
-
Neurodivergent Couples
-
Supporting kiddos with anxiety or sensory processing differences
-
The Couple/Career balancing act
EXAMPLES OF TREATMENT MODALITIES I COMMONLY USE
ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an action-oriented intervention that focuses on helping clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions. Instead the client works to accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations and learns to move forward in their life with a better understanding of these feelings and the impact they have on those they care most about.
SPACE
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions focuses on teaching parents how best to respond to their child's anxious behaviors by learning to calmly accept certain levels of the child's distress, while avoiding reactions that exacerbate symptoms. Through this kind of treatment, parents can develop the tools to effectively address the worry and reduce the need to use their own accommodating behaviors.
PD
Positive Discipline is a parenting and couples communication management model that focuses valuable life skills that emphasize social responsibility while helping others feel a sense of significance. It's based on the idea that all behaviors stem from a basic human need to belong.
